Woody Island
Woody Island is a feature film shot in and off the coast of Esperance, Western Australia. A remote island. A few lucky campers. A mysterious caretaker. Welcome to Woody Island. While the campers are busy with beaches and barbeques, reluctant young tour guide Ronnie Sheppard bunkers down in his tent hoping the weekend passes as swiftly as possible. That is until something unexpected happens. Ronnie’s not sure what it is, or who’s behind it, but it’s left to he and heartbroken backpacker Tegan to figure things out. As the unlikely pair head across the rugged island the true nature of their isolation becomes apparent.

Woody has been living on the island of Moorea, near Tahiti, in French Polynesia since 1982, the year when he was invited to take over the management of a fruit farm under a 3-year contract. He continued sculpture during his free time and for his own pleasure as he has done since he was 16. Woody stayed in Moorea where he became a professional sculptor and a renown Tahiti artist. He created many decorative pieces for private buyers and for the region’s major hotels which have purchased many of his creations. “My passion is to forge wood, so to speak, to make it interprete my subject in the most graceful and most colorful fashion possible” he says.
The wood found in Apataki is unique and leads to beautiful forms of natural grace. Tahiti features many and very interesting types of wood, so the possibilities are infinite. Woody spends half his time in Apataki with his pearl farm where he produces black pearls to add to his “sculptural art jewellery”, and when he needs to collects the beautiful Kahaia wood for his larger sculptures.
