Using the medium of light, nature creates artistic images and sculptures. Through the windows of our eyes, the brain perceives these images, and then interprets and processes them, creating lasting impressions. Sometimes the beauty of nature is striking and obvious to everyone. At other times it is more subtle. The latter situations require a certain state of mind and a conscious search which involves considerable effort, including planning, patience, discipline, perseverance and attention to detail. These attributes allow some of us to see and appreciate the beauty of nature, while others may overlook the same.
The next step is to capture this beauty with the camera. In addition to the above-mentioned prerequisites, a nature photographer must possess a love of nature, good judgment, quick reflexes, appropriate photographic equipment and excellent technical skills.
Then there's the element of "luck". In my opinion, luck is not entirely out of our control. (The following considerations are applicable to any aspect of life). If you are in your bedroom and you want to photograph the Grand Canyon, the chance of your getting lucky is zero (unless your house happens to be located on the rim of the Grand Canyon). If you leave your house and go to the Grand Canyon, you have significantly improved the statistics to get lucky. You can increase your luck even more by taking a camera, making sure you have film, batteries etc.
Once you have your "lucky shot", it allows you to relive the moment at any time in the future and to share the beauty with others who could not witness these moments in person (because they did not get out of their bedroom!!!)
Nature presents an infinite number of lovely visions. Overcoming the obstacles to capture these images provides perpetual challenges as well as opportunities to learn. This is what makes photography such a wonderful hobby.
My love for nature and interest in photography originates from my childhood in the Fiji Islands, a place where you can still have a whole island to yourself, and the beauty and biodiversity of the marine life is phenomenal!!! This interest was fostered and nurtured by my parents.
These days, in between sessions of nature photography, I practice Vascular Surgery and try to be a parent to three children, one 10 year old dog and one twenty year old tortoise, and a husband to one (only) wife (Alas!). Accordingly, there's never a dull moment!!!
It is my sincere hope that some of these tributes to nature may bring as much joy to your heart as they did to mine.
