Perceptual Control Theory (PCT) is a unified integrative interdisciplinary theory of self-regulation within psychology and beyond (a self-regulatory approach - see Carver & Scheier, 1982; TOTE, Miller Pribram et al, 1960) developed by William T. Powers, a control systems engineer. It has some similarities to cybernetics (Norbert Weiner, Stanford Beer; Ross Ashby). PCT is a theory of control by living systems and states that 'behavior is the control of perception'. It involves negative feedback loops organised in a hierarchy control through discrepancy reduction and manage perceptual conflict (often causing 'losing control' or 'loss of control') through reorganisation. The theory has influenced self-regulation theory in psychology (e.g. Carver; Scheier; Karoly; Hyland, Watkins, Martin; Tesser; baumeister; heatherton), neuroscience, mental health, psychotherapy integration, sociology - affect control theory, robotics, artificial intelligence, human factors, education, developmental psychology and philosophy. Method of Levels is a transdiagnostic cognitive therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or metacognitive therapy, derived from PCT; it adopts and mindful stance as in MBCT - mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. PCT can be used for cognitive modelling and computer simulations - it models adaptive control and motor coordination. PCT is not Personal Construct Theory but does share modest conceptual overlap.
