Every person on our planet perceives things differently; people always follow more than one method to solve a problem, rather than just following repeated procedure. It is this difference in perception that has led to so many developments in the field of science and technology. People indifferently parts of the world have different habits and are also known to perceive things differently. As an example a person in the UK keeps left while driving which is different from how people in the USA drive (they keep to the right). This is done by the SI (standardization international) system of units, where each quantity such as height or weight is given a standard unit and a definition of each of these units is also given. This system also lists conversions from one system of units to another. A question might arise in one's mind, why do we require units? The answer to this question is quite simple. Let me describe it with an example, say we compare the heights of two people any normal person may be able to say just by looking which of the two is taller or shorter, but it would be very difficult for the same person to tell by how much is the person taller or shorter. This is where the use of units comes in and hence we are able to make a figurative comparison between the two people.
