Merle Audrey Jacobs (PhD York University, Sociology) Associate Professor Department of Equity Studies and Department of Social Science, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University. Teaches in the area of Health, Gender and Social Justice. Prior to joining York University, she worked as a nurse manager in the Department of Psychiatry in Toronto specializing in Disordered Eating and Trauma. She was a member of the RNAO Policy committee and an Executive Member of the Mental Health Nursing Interest Group RNAO in 2001. A report in April 2005, on ‘Employment equity for racial minorities and Aboriginal people’ for CRRF dealt with racialized women in nursing, current government policies, professional organizations and the changes needed for equity to occur. The Canadian Race Relation Foundation grant allowed us to create the Centre for Equity in Health and Society. As we found evidence of systemic disadvantages for racial and ethnic minorities within the nursing profession, this Centre has advocated on their behalf with the federal government, nursing colleges and nursing professional organizations in Ontario.
Interest is in advocacy and dealing with trauma such as -Vicarious traumatization in human service professions, Employment equity for racial minorities and Aboriginal people” Burmese ethnic women living in Toronto: Experiences of trauma prior to immigration in Burma\refugee camps
