Kamal - Film Maker
Kamaluddin better known as Kamal is a director well known among the Malayali community around the world. His name is regarded above many innovative directors of his time. He is one of the few directors who have maintained his popularity throughout. He was born on November 28, 1957 in Mathilakam, Kodungallur. He was the eldest of three sons born to his parents K M Abdul Majeed and his wife Sulaikhabi. Kamal married his uncles daughter Saburabi; they were blessed by, a daughter Hanna Kamal and a son Januse Mohammed.
His interest in film making led him to enroll himself at the Kalabharathi Film Institute, Trichur. As a student at the Academy he had worked along with his fellow mates as an assistant director to develop his first film. The project was eventually dropped. Inspired by the fact the directors like I V Sasi and Bharathan were gaining popularity and fame, and a liking for movies along with the encouragement and support from his uncle Yousuf Padiyath, created a driving force in his mind to move towards Cinema. The yester year actor and a relative of Kamal, Bahadur was his guide to this industry. Thrasam directed by Ashraf Padiyath was his official entry into the Mystic world of Cinema as a writer. It was his short story which was later elaborated into a film.
Working with his Mentors P.N Menon, K.S Sethumadhavan and Bharathan as Assistant Director moulded him into a director and gave the finishing touches before he debuted as a director in the production of Mizhineer Pookkal Starring Mohanlal and Oorvasi released on June 19, 1986.
