Cheetah, Zululand, South Africa
I have always been in awe of the beauty that Mother Nature has bestowed upon us. I was thrilled and excited when I was able to get this photo of a Cheetah taken while on safari in Zululand, South Africa. This beautiful and unique creature is rarely seen and unfortunately, a very endangered species. I am inspired by sun rays shining through a cloudy sky and the red glare of the sun setting on snowy mountain peaks.
As the earth turns on its axis, we get a glimpse of miracles that occur each year. But nothing in nature ever repeats itself in the same way twice. Every spring we are treated to a rebirth as the trees show off their tender new leaves and we watch the swelling buds on flora as they develop into magnificent flowers throughout the warm summer months. In the fall, the dying leaves become a spectacular display of color before the chill of winter puts everything to sleep for three long months.
I have learned over the years, to keep my cameras close at hand and not leave home without them. Our environment is constantly changing and what we see today will never look exactly the same again. When I see Mount Rainier or Mount Si reflected in a lake as smooth as glass, I feel an obligation to capture and preserve it for those who may never have the opportunity to witness what I have seen. My personal satisfaction comes from knowing I can return to that one special moment in time by simply flipping through the pages of my albums.
I have been fortunate in life. I have had the opportunity to travel to far off lands. Japan’s national treasure, Mount Fuji, is beautiful beyond description. I have stood on the beaches of the Hawaiian Islands and watched the sun sink into the Pacific Ocean. I have marveled at Europe’s ancient architectures, which date back to a time when the earth was still considered flat—beware how far you sail! I recently returned from South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe with memories, stories, and most importantly, photographs that will last a lifetime!
This great land, which we call home, has its share of magnificent scenery – “from sea to shining sea”. Retirement has given me the chance to explore, seek and find the beauty that lies within our shores. In my case it could be less than a mile from my home where Lake Wilderness is nestled amongst the trees and Mount Rainier hovers in the background. I can drive 75 miles to the east and view a landscape that bares no resemblance to the western side of Washington State. Leaving an ocean behind me I come upon a desert and canyons. I gaze at the beauty that lines the banks of the Wenatchee River as autumn turns the forests to a brilliance of red, yellow and gold.
I have learned that it takes an average of 100 to 200 shots to get that one very special picture. The one that freezes that particular moment and preserves it for all eternity. It’s a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Sometimes you just get lucky. More often, it pays to simply persevere and always be aware of the natural wonders that surround us.
