I found myself drawn to Vajrapāņi because of his puzzling nature. This erstwhile companion to the Buddha found throughout the narrative relief carving of Gandhāra, carrying his thunderbolt and clad in his working man’s costume, engaged in the protection of the Buddha and the disciplining of any miscreant approaching the Buddha, is difficult to understand or explain. Why would such a character, such a ruffian indeed, be so close to the Buddha? The characters of the two figures seem incompatible. Then, in the Mahāyāna caves of Maharashtra, particularly in the entrance to the central shrine of Ajanta.1, Bodhisattva Vajrapāņi is a being so magnificent that his early origins as a Gandhāran enforcer are unimaginable. For that matter, why is Indra so prominent in Gandhāra? Why does Buddhaghoşa equate Indra with Vajrapāņi?
