Roadrunner Bird
Roadrunners are a type of species in bird who belong to cuckoo family. The species named Cuculidae are available in North and Central America. There are two categories of roadrunners. Greater roadrunners and lesser roadrunners. Greater roadrunners include Geococcyx Californians,Congling's roadrunners,etc. The lesser roadrunners include Geococcyx velox. The species of roadrunners are available in different size. Their size ranges from 18 inches to 61 cm.The roadrunners are available in black- brown and white streak. They have a broad tail with white tips on the feathers which are located at the outer end of their body. They also have strong feet, oversized dark bill and long legs. Behind each eye the roadrunner bird have bare patch skin. The patches are having a shade of blue anterior and red anterior. The lesser roadrunner birds are similar to that of the greater, only that they are slightly small in size, not very streaky, and also consist of small bills. Roadrunner bird is terrestrial in nature as they are always seen in the ground. They are capable to fly but don't tend to fly much without need. Since they are from cuckoo family their feet are zygodactyl, which means having two toes at the back and two toes in the front. The run rates of the roadrunners are 20 miles per hour. These specific birds are omnivores in nature. They generally eat insects such as crickets,caterpillars,beetles,grasshoppers,etc. They also feed on small reptiles such as lizards, snakes, rattlesnakes. Other food of roadrunners birds are tarantulas, scorpions, centipedes, spiders, snails, small birds, eggs, etc. Other than this roadrunner birds also have a food habit of getting fruits and seeds such as cactus, sumac, prickly pear etc. Roadrunner birds are the species that have a different behavior from that of other birds. They are seen in pairs but they generally wishes to stay alone. They are monogamous in nature and thus each pair mates for life long.They prefer to stay in a territory for a year at least.They don't prefer to migrate from one place to another quite often. Their nest consists of sticks, leaves, straw etc. They prefer to build their nest in a low branch of a tree. They hatch 2-6 eggs together. The roadrunner bird generally cares their babies a lot. The babies get parentalcare. Incubation is done by both parents and feed their hatchlings together. The reproductive seasons of Roadrunner birds are from spring to that of midsummer.
