The Silver Iris - photography by Granger Macy
I'm finally making the move to take my growing interest in photography to the next level. But I find the idea of making my avocation more 'professional' to be quite thought provoking. It makes me think of the difference between work and play, and how I really don't want photography to become work. I do a lot of what some would call 'fine art' photography and I have to say I really do enjoy seeing my work up on the walls at Ithaca College in both the business school and the campus center. And I loved the feeling when a person at Ithaca College, finding out my name, spontaneously told me how much they loved the work I had up -immediately recalling my name from the exhibits.
I do a lot of things, some of which people would call work. I teach courses in leadership and power, and write on how to teach leadership and create student empowerment in the classroom. I am also committed to some local causes. I enjoy bringing my photography into all those endeavors. None of that feels like work. In the course of all this I've done lots of event photography and even an occasional stint at portrait and wedding photography. All of the positive feedback from those efforts has been a consistent push to take this to the next level.
Through all of this it's the connection to the beauty of these things and the many wonderful people that drives my enjoyment of photography. So my work in building a website and some of the other professional 'tools of the trade' has to be done in service to this beauty.
