Glen Dessary Estate - Information site for visitors to Glen Dessary
Information site for walkers and visitors to the Glen Dessary region of the Scottish Highlands Please help us by following these guidelines
Access Information Red Deer Management
Management of the red deer population through stalking is essential. The cull maintains the health of the
deer stock and prevents damage through over-grazing and trampling. Red deer spend the summer months on the
higher slopes and corries. A disturbance results in their leaving their natural habitat and moving to more
inaccessible ground, hindering the necessary cull. Stalking and venison production provide employment and
are the main source of income for this Highland community. Stalking takes place from the 1st July until 16th
February, but the period from the 10th August to the 10th October is critical for us and is the most sensitive to
disturbance. Least disturbance would result if you would please follow the routes on the map,
During the most critical stalking period - 15th August to the 10th October excluding Sundays - it would be
greatly appreciated if walkers can do everything to minimise disturbance. As it is not possible to communicate
the daily stalking activities to all walkers in the Knoydart area the best way you can help is by keeping at this
time to the low lying paths marked in black on the map .N.B. Walkers are welcome throughout the year on the
John Muir Trust and Knoydart Foundation areas where stalking and venison production are not the major activity
Camping is suggested at Bothies. Please do not light fires anywhere else .Dogs Please follow the Country Code and keep
dogs strictly under control and close at hand at all times. It is especially important to follow this advice when
near the Estate livestock. We hope you will enjoy Glen Dessaryin one of the last remaining wilderness areas in Britain,
and help us to keep it this way for future generations to enjoy
YOUR CO-OPERATION IS APPRECIATED - THANK YOU
Glen Dessary is a member of the Knoydart Deer Management Group which endorses this signage policy
