Halloween, originally named “Samhain” from the Gaelic culture, is now one of the most popular holidays in the United States. The Irish holiday originally began hundreds of years ago as part of an ancient Celtic festival to honor the dead. In Europe, families have been carving fruits such as pears and gourds (the way we carve pumpkins) as part of their Halloween ritual for years. These carved fruits then served as candles to welcome the dead. It wasn’t until the English settlers began celebrating Halloween on American soil that pumpkins came to play a role in the holiday. The pumpkin is a fruit that was used heavily by the Native Americans and then adopted into the English settlers’ celebration of All Hollows Eve. The settlers began creating their welcoming candles using pumpkins because they found that the orange fruit was much larger and easier to carve. And thus, our Halloween carving frenzy was created!
