Our Storied Past: Preserving the Historical Narrative of San Diego’s Italian Community. . .
The Italian Historical Society of San Diego was established in 2006 as an auxiliary of Convivio Society for Italian Humanities.
Convivio Society for Italian Humanities, a nonprofit organization founded in 2003, promotes Italian arts, culture, and history in San Diego through education, research, and cultural events—embracing an innovative approach to cultural advancement. Convivio's vision is to establish the Convivio Institute for Italian Culture and Heritage in San Diego. Convivio's mission is to advance and preserve Italian humanities and cultural identity through scholarship, community engagement, and innovative programming while striving to revitalize the grandeur of Italian culture in San Diego. Insofar as historical preservation, Convivio strives to preserve San Diego's Italian heritage and create a lasting historical tableau through research, archives, and historical projects and events coordinated in conjunction with local universities and other organizations.
The cornerstone of Convivio's preservation focus is the Italian Community Digital Archives Project, which preserves the local Italian community’s history through photographs, documents, and oral histories. You can view the digital archives at italianarchives.org.
In 2007, Convivio partnered with the University of California, San Diego, to establish the physical counterpart to the digital archives at the university’s Mandeville Special Collections Library. As a result of this landmark development, we are now accepting original materials such as photographs, documents, manuscripts, books, and film, which will be housed at the library for preservation as well as public/research access. Our research team will continue to duplicate the community’s historical materials for inclusion in the digital archives. To contribute materials, please contact us.
We are also working to establish the Convivio Center for Italian Heritage, as part of the larger vision of the Convivio Institute for Italian Culture. The heritage center will be a community resource that will recount the history of San Diego’s Italians by housing historical artifacts, as well as preserve the local Italian historical narrative through scholarship, photographic exhibits, and other displays.
