The Conversation of love
Laura Duksta knew from a young age that she was meant to travel the world, meet her brothers and sisters, and spread the message of love. What she didn't know was that her life's biggest challenge, losing all her hair at age eleven to Alopecia Areata, would teach her valuable lessons about love, compassion, and understanding for humanity, as well as for herself. That wasn't the only challenge life threw at her. In 1988 while in college, her best friend, Donna, died in a car accident that they were in together during a road trip from Boston to Maryland and back. Laura heard a very clear voice tell her to put here seat belt on, not something she always did. Not long after, the car flipped off the road, Laura was upside down but safe; Donna didn't make it. Laura believes now that she has an angel by her side who reminds her to "Keep Shining!" That's why she always signs her books that way. Ten years later, and back in Connecticut for the first time since the accident, Laura heard a song called Shine. Immediately she began crying--she barely heard the words: The soul of an angel Touched from above Your Spirit is shining Surrounded by love You´ll feel emotions you have never known There will be questions in your mind Your sister left your side to help you grow And now she watches while you shine It was later that same evening that her sister, who was a younger mother than expected, and now pregnant with her second child, called to say that she and her husband had gotten into a big fight and he had left. Laura was away and couldn't run over to comfort her sister, so she found herself praying. As she prayed for her sister, she heard a clear voice again, "Your sister is fine, pray for your nephew." As she did, the whole idea for I Love You More flooded her mind and heart. At the time she had been tending bar in South Beach, Miami for six years, after graduating with a degree in Sociology from the University of Maryland. Laura's mom jokes she moved to South Beach and practiced being social. The truth is, Laura didn't mean to tend bar for so many years, but she had lost sight of what was important. She now believes that prayer changed the course of her life, getting her back on track to realize the idea she had when she was young of traveling the world and spreading the message of love. Her first book, New York Times bestseller I Love You More, was written for her nephew Tyler and for all children so that they may know that, no matter what's going on in their lives or in the world around them, how truly loved they are. Her message is really meant for everyone, including herself. Laura loves writing children's books because they reach the children, parents, grandparents and teachers. Her second book, You Are a Gift to the World shares the many ways that our children and our planet offer us many of the best and biggest gifts of all. She continues to spread this message of love through her books, school programs and inspirational talks. Laura graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park and resides now in Fort Lauderdale, FL surrounded by the love of her family and friends, cherishing the beauty and wonder of the world.
