Holly Azevedo a descendant of John Glover Kellogg has written a bio of his life. After learning the business of assaying gold, Kellogg became a trusted colleague in the volatile financial world of San Francisco. His minting of hundreds of thousands of private coins in the 1850’s kept the California economy intact when the influence of the U.S. government on the new state was as distant as the untamed miles to Washington, D.C. He founded a New York railroad, was swindled by a corrupt capitalist he thought was a friend, and suffered family tragedy. He frequently rubbed shoulders with people whose names are etched in history, such as William H. Seward and William C. Ralston, even if his name did not always make the record.
