Sonia Dhingra - Ceramist. THE EXPRESSION OF THE SPIRIT AND JOY OF LIFE THROUGH CLAY. Pottery - my creative journey - let it speak for itself. I really cannot pin point when my ceramic journey began, but I can only say that clay drew me towards it much before I knew myself. Qualified as a Textile Designer and specialized as a block printer, I was a freelance Textile artist for 20 years. For the last 10 years working as a ceramist. I was born and grew up in New Delhi. I studied Textile Designing from New Delhi Polytechnic for Women and specialized in Block Printing. I decided to work as a freelance designer creating exclusive designs one of a kind and holding exhibitions in Delhi and Bombay. Also worked for DCM as a freelance designer. Delhi crafts council invited me to participate in a show organized by them at Rabindra Bhawan, New Delhi. I was always attracted to clay - mitti. In 1978 I joined Delhi Blue Pottery and started learning under the guidance of Sardar Gurcharan Singh ji - known as daddyji to all. Though short but working with clay was a magical experience for me. It was no easy task to learn to centre clay. Day after day was a struggle and then one day clay and I together decided that this was not the right time for me and I had to wait till I was ready to give hundred percent to clay. I had to put on hold my endevours to become a potter and ceramic artist. I went back to raising my family.
