March 26, 2009 marked history for the Filipinos in Vietnam. The Philippine Business Group in Vietnam received its license for an Establishment of a Foreign Business Association as approved by the Peoples Committee of Ho Chi Minh City.
Looking back, the first Philippine company, Unilab, set foot way back in 1990, and years thereafter, Philippine companies remain committed to contributing to Vietnams further development. With new investments pouring in, resulting in total invested capital close to one billion US dollars (as of mid 2009). The transfer of technology, the shared skills and competence building from years of nurturing businesses not just in the Philippines but around the region, the cross training exchanges between their mother companies and branches in Vietnam, these are the highlights of the contributions of the Philippine companies to Vietnam. Many observers claim that there may be more Filipinos assigned to multinational companies, other than the Philippine-owned companies, than any expatriate nationality in Vietnam.
More companies operating in Vietnam benefit from Filipino expatriates assigned in key positions, in various industries like garment, consultancy, design and engineering services, fishery, food service, agro-forestry, education, medical insurance, advertising, post production, human resources, heavy industries, personal / home and health care products, water utilities, construction, motor batteries, transportation and forwarding.
With such a Philippine presence felt in many businesses, it is timely that a Philippine Business Group is finally formed and recognized by our host country, Vietnam, to serve as a voice and a home of Philippine Businesses in Vietnam.
