Florence Kelley :: The Life and Times of Florence Kelley in Chicago, 1891-1899
This Northwestern University web site assembles 50,000 pages of historical documents chronicling Florence Kelley's 9 years in Chicago, during a time including the World's Columbian Exposition, the Panic of 1893, epidemics, strikes and gathering momentum for social, labor and womens' rights legislation. Kelley led or particpiated in projects including wage and ethnicity census of the slums and tenements in Chicago; Hull House; the reporting of cases and contagion in the smallpox epidemic of 1893; the enforcement of the universal primary education laws, and, most importantly, enforcing the provisions of the Illinois Factory Inspections Law of 1893.
