These photographs are a series of tableau images created in the studio from small sculptural objects, usually things I make in five minutes to at most an hour. These props are created exclusively for the purpose of making photographs, though some are partially recycled from other projects. They are meant to be raw and fast, and are all explorations of my interest in organic processes, the alchemy of the creative process, and my longtime love of classical (and other) mythology. Over the past two years, I have been photographing two cinder-block buildings used as temporary housing for migrant workers for a few weeks at the end of the tobacco-growing season in southern Maryland. These structures begin every season looking very much like prison cells, cold and impersonal. By the end of their stay, the workers staying in the rooms have left marks or evidence which transform the industrial / impersonal space in some way.
