Bauman Fine Art
Marilyn Bauman has been exhibiting regularly for more than twenty years in regional, solo, and group shows. Her work is in many private and public collections, including Wilmington Trust Bank, MBNA, the Division of Libraries Art Collection of the State of Delaware, and the Blount Collection of American Art. Her work received a first prize in the 2004 Center for the Creative Arts Members Show, in the 2000 Dover Art Leagues Fine Art Members Show, and the 1997 Rehoboth Art League Members Show. One of her paintings was awarded best of show in the 1998 Rehoboth Art League Show. During December 2002, she had a one-person exhibit at Grace Church, Wilmington. During March 2000, she had a one-person exhibit in the Brodsky Gallery of the Educational Testing Service, Princeton, New Jersey, and during October 2000, her work was exhibited at the Center for the Creative Arts, Yorklyn, Delaware. Her painting Lewes Harbor was part of the 2001 Historical Society of Delaware exhibit Recognizing Delaware, artistic assets from the Wilmington Trust Collection. Marilyn employs intense color, sharp contrasts, and active lines in her paintings. Her subjects range from portraits, to still life, to landscapes. Scenes from the tropical fishing villages of Florida, the rocky coast of Massachusetts, the architecture of Quebec as well as Wilmington, Delawares riverfront, Yorklyn, Delawares pastures, and the Provence and Tuscany hillsides have inspired her recent work.
An author and educator as well as an artist, Marilyn Bauman has written articles about art and artists for Delaware Today magazine, the Wilmington News Journal, and Vistas (the journal of The Barnes Foundation). Her first book, Edward L. Loper, Sr., The Prophet of Color: A Disciples Reflections, was published in 1999. Rhonda Graham, a reporter for The News Journal, calls the book the first and most comprehensive biography of Edward Loper.
After receiving an MA degree in English, Marilyn taught for twenty-five years in the writing programs of several universities (including sixteen years at the University of Delaware). In 1991, she became executive director of the Delaware Institute for the Arts in Education (DIAE), an aesthetic education program for Delaware teachers and their students based on John Deweys educational theories and modeled on the Lincoln Center Institute in New York City. During the past three years, she has developed and taught Adventures in Perception, a seminar in aesthetics and appreciation of the visual arts based on the pedagogy developed by Dr. Albert Barnes and Violette de Mazia at The Barnes Foundation. This seminar, sponsored by the Violette de Mazia Trust, has been presented at the Delaware Art Museum and the Academy of Lifelong Learning in Wilmington. For the past two years, Marilyn also taught another seminar, Advanced Theoretical and Critical Studies in the Fine Arts, held at The Barnes Foundation, sponsored by the Violette de Mazia Trust, and accredited by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She was appointed Director of Education for the Trust in June 2003. She also teaches painting in her home studio and, in May 2004, she hosted a painting trip to Tuscany for 17 Delaware artists.
