Seafarers Yacht Club of Annapolis, Inc.
The Seafarers Yacht Club is a non-profit, tax-exempt boating organization whose mission is to encourage and promote yachting. The Club was organized in 1960 by a group of black men with a common interest in boating. They initially met in members homes, and later in a rented one-room storefront in Annapolis, giving the building a nautical motif while continuing to look for other opportunities. In 1967, the members purchased an abandoned schoolhouse at Third and Chester Avenue that had been built as an elementary school for black children in Annapolis. This became the Clubhouse that remains until today. The building was thoroughly renovated with the addition of a swimming pool and a deck overlooking Back Creek. Today the Club is comprised of over sixty members and is well known for seamanship and community service. Over the years, members of the Seafarers Yacht Club and Auxiliary have been towers of strength and strong forces for progressive, effective and efficient public service. Many of them have devoted themselves to a host of humanitarian causes. Their activities have been so extensive; it would seem one lifetime could not encompass them all. Yet they have found the time and energy to serve, to work, and lead, shouldering countless burdens with unfailing good humor and grace. Some of these activities have brought them richly deserved honors.
