Adolescent Literacy Professional Development Modules
In late 2009, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and
Secondary Education commissioned a group of Boston-based researchers and educators to create a series of professional development modules focused on adolescent literacy. In response, Joshua Lawrence (Harvard Graduate School of Education), Jacy Ippolito (Salem State College), Patrisha Newhall (Landmark School), and Keryn Kwedor (Landmark School)have created a series of four professional development modules that may be used to increase educators’ understanding of current tensions in adolescent literacy and
refine instruction in order to promote students’ content-area learning in grades 4-12 across the state of Massachusetts.
The four modules each contain three units comprised of 3-to-4 professional development sessions. The modules will be freely available to Massachusetts districts and schools, and it is anticipated that the modules will be delivered by knowledgeable district and school professional development providers. This website has been developed to support the dissemination of these materials by offering supported courses hybrid courses to schools and districts across the state.
