#487754. HINKLETOWN IOWA: A Prairie Ghost Town and its early Iowa history
Hinkletown is a ghost town on the border of Iowa and Keokuk County. The town sat on the Muscatine to Fort Des Moines Trail, a southern leg of the Diamond Trail. Settled in the 1840s, and also known as Foote Post Office, Hinkletown was a boom-town during the Civil War, and the area of Foote contributed over three dozen men to the Union effort. A group of Peace Democrats also lived at and near Hinkletown, and participated in anti-war activities. At one time the town boasted three general stores, many other businesses and several hundred residents. Recent research by an extended group of descendants and researchers demonstrates the significance of Hinkletown to Iowa's history.
